L’Institut Fraunhofer de recherche appliquée sur les polymères (IAP) de Potsdam-Golm (Brandebourg) s’est associé le 3 octobre 2012 à Flexsolar, entreprise brésilienne de Joinville (Santa Catarina, Brésil), pour développer et commercialiser des cellules photovoltaïques organiques légères, peu coûteuses et flexibles afin de répondre aux besoins du marché brésilien.

Le procédé employé pour la fabrication des cellules, dit « bobine à bobine », consiste, contrairement à la méthode classique selon laquelle les éléments de la cellule sont fabriqués séparément, en un procédé continu similaire à une chaîne de montage. Ainsi, les différentes couches de la cellule sont imprimées les unes après les autres sur une couche-support flexible qui roule de façon continue. A la fin du processus, l’assemblage des couches est encapsulé de façon étanche, afin de le protéger en particulier de l’oxygène.

L’IAP se chargera donc de la technologie et des procédés, ainsi que de mettre en place une installation-pilote au Brésil. Le développement du produit et sa mise sur le marché dans toute l’Amérique du Sud seront réalisés par Flexsolar. Le procédé de fabrication « bobine à bobine » engendre en effet de plus faibles coûts d’investissement, et permettra ainsi de mieux répondre à la forte demande en électricité en Amérique du Sud.

Ce partenariat est soutenu par le gouvernement brésilien dans le cadre de son programme « Lumière pour tous » (Luz para todos), qui vise à encourager le développement des énergies renouvelables notamment dans les campagnes et les territoires isolés du pays.
