Des chercheurs de l’universit\u00e9 de Lund viennent de publier dans la revue Science des travaux qui ouvrent de nouvelles perspectives pour l’\u00e9nergie solaire. Leurs r\u00e9sultats montrent que les nanofils – structures unidimensionnelles semblables \u00e0 de longs cheveux, mais mille fois plus fines, et poussant perpendiculairement \u00e0 la surface d’un substrat – pourraient \u00eatre utilis\u00e9s pour fabriquer des cellules photovolta\u00efques efficaces et peu co\u00fbteuses. Magnus Borgstr\u00f6m, chercheur en physique des semi-conducteurs et partie prenante de cette \u00e9tude, souligne que c’est la premi\u00e8re fois que l’utilisation de ces nanofils appara\u00eet comme une alternative valable.<\/p>\n

La recherche dans ce domaine s’est fortement d\u00e9velopp\u00e9e mais jusqu’\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent l’efficacit\u00e9 r\u00e9duite des nanofils en terme d’absorption de la lumi\u00e8re, avec un maximum \u00e0 10%, repr\u00e9sentait un facteur limitant. Les 13,8% obtenus par Magnus Borgstr\u00f6m et de ses coll\u00e8gues vont changer la donne.<\/p>\n

Cette \u00e9quipe d\u00e9veloppe un nouveau type de cellules solaires \u00e0 partir de r\u00e9seaux de nanofils con\u00e7us pour absorber une plus large part du spectre lumineux. L’objectif est de produire des cellules capables de fournir significativement plus de puissance par unit\u00e9 de surface que les cellules photovolta\u00efques actuelles (voir encadr\u00e9 en bas). Les nanofils utilis\u00e9s sont constitu\u00e9s d’un semi-conducteur, le phosphure d’indium, et sont arrang\u00e9s au sein d’un espace de quelques millim\u00e8tres carr\u00e9s seulement qui peut comprendre jusqu’\u00e0 quatre millions de fils. Ils agissent comme des antennes qui absorbent la lumi\u00e8re du soleil et g\u00e9n\u00e8rent un courant. Le diam\u00e8tre des fils est essentiel : c’est de lui que d\u00e9pend l’absorption des photons. Une dizaine de nanom\u00e8tres de diff\u00e9rence suffit \u00e0 alt\u00e9rer le fonctionnement.<\/p>\n

Les r\u00e9sultats publi\u00e9s par l’\u00e9quipe de Lund montrent que leurs nanofils peuvent g\u00e9n\u00e9rer des flux de m\u00eame niveau que les cellules classiques en couvrant une surface bien plus r\u00e9duite. Cette recherche a \u00e9t\u00e9 conduite dans le cadre d’un projet financ\u00e9 par l’Union europ\u00e9enne baptis\u00e9 AMON-RA et coordonn\u00e9 par Knut Deppert, professeur de physique \u00e0 l’Universit\u00e9 de Lund. L’\u00e9quipe vient de recevoir un nouveau financement de l’Agence de l’\u00e9nergie su\u00e9doise (Energimyndigheten) de neuf millions de couronnes su\u00e9doises sur quatre ans et va poursuivre ces travaux afin d’augmenter encore l’efficacit\u00e9 de ces cellules.<\/p>\n

Ces nouvelles cellules ne sont encore que des prototypes de laboratoire mais la compagnie SolVoltaics a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9e en 2008 pour introduire cette technologie sur le march\u00e9. A terme, l’id\u00e9e est de pouvoir utiliser cette technologie dans de grandes infrastructures photovolta\u00efques situ\u00e9es dans le sud des Etats-Unis ou de l’Espagne et en Afrique.<\/p>\n

La recherche sur l’\u00e9nergie solaire est tr\u00e8s productive en Su\u00e8de. Diff\u00e9rentes technologies pour capter l’\u00e9nergie solaires :<\/p>\n

Les cellules solaires en silicone qui sont actuellement utilis\u00e9es pour produire de l’\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 dans les maisons sont assez peu co\u00fbteuses mais elles ne sont capables d’utiliser qu’une quantit\u00e9 limit\u00e9e de la lumi\u00e8re : un seul mat\u00e9riau ne peut absorber qu’une fraction du spectre lumineux. Un axe de recherche parall\u00e8le \u00e0 celui des nanofils consiste \u00e0 combiner diff\u00e9rents mat\u00e9riaux semi-conducteurs afin de capturer un spectre plus large. Le probl\u00e8me de cette technologie est que ces mat\u00e9riaux sont extr\u00eamement chers et ne peuvent donc \u00eatre utilis\u00e9s que pour des applications sp\u00e9cifiques telles que les satellites ou les avions militaires. Ce n’est pas le cas des nanofils. Leur dimension tr\u00e8s r\u00e9duite permet de combiner le m\u00eame genre de mat\u00e9riaux plus facilement et \u00e0 moindre prix, tout en permettant d’obtenir une efficacit\u00e9 \u00e9lev\u00e9e. Le proc\u00e9d\u00e9 de fabrication est \u00e9galement moins complexe. <\/p>\n
