Deux physiciens aux USA ont r\u00e9cemment d\u00e9couvert une explication possible \u00e0 l’un des probl\u00e8mes majeurs qui emp\u00eache le d\u00e9veloppement de la fusion nucl\u00e9aire. Ils proposent une solution qui, si valid\u00e9e exp\u00e9rimentalement, devrait permettre de nets progr\u00e8s de performance au sein des tokamaks. Voil\u00e0 de quoi encourager nos espoirs de ma\u00eetriser cette nouvelle technologie afin de l’utiliser industriellement pour la production d’\u00e9lectricit\u00e9.<\/p>\n

En effet, \u00e0 l’heure o\u00f9 l’avenir \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique de la plan\u00e8te est au coeur des pr\u00e9occupations, la fusion nucl\u00e9aire constituerait une source d’\u00e9nergie id\u00e9ale car abondante et peu polluante. Cependant, les conditions strictes permettant la fusion sont difficiles \u00e0 mettre en oeuvre si bien que la technologie en est encore au stade de la recherche et de l’exp\u00e9rimentation aujourd’hui. L’objectif de r\u00e9aliser une centrale \u00e0 fusion, qui convertirait la chaleur d\u00e9gag\u00e9e par les r\u00e9actions de fusion en \u00e9lectricit\u00e9, est encore loin d’\u00eatre atteint. Les communaut\u00e9s scientifiques nationales et internationales se sont lanc\u00e9es dans de gros projets \u00e0 la hauteur de cet enjeu consid\u00e9rable. L’ampleur des investissements laisse perplexe une partie de la population. Le d\u00e9veloppement de la fusion nucl\u00e9aire est actuellement une source de d\u00e9bats quant \u00e0 la pertinence d’engager de telles sommes pour un r\u00e9sultat non assur\u00e9. Dans ce contexte, les attentes sont nombreuses et pressantes.<\/p>\n

C’est donc avec enthousiasme que Luis Delgado-Aparicio et David Gates, tous deux physiciens au Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory du U.S. Department of Energy, ont r\u00e9cemment fait part de leur d\u00e9couverte. Ils se sont int\u00e9ress\u00e9s aux instabilit\u00e9s qui peuvent survenir au sein du plasma dans les configurations de type « tokamaks », et qui constituent le probl\u00e8me majeur freinant leur d\u00e9veloppement. L’apparition de ces instabilit\u00e9s tridimensionnelles dites « disruptions » ont \u00e9t\u00e9 reconnues comme in\u00e9vitables, m\u00eame en conditions normales de confinement. Elles correspondent \u00e0 une perte violente et tr\u00e8s rapide du confinement du plasma, et peuvent endommager significativement le mat\u00e9riel. Par ailleurs, les risques d’endommagement sont d’autant plus \u00e9lev\u00e9s que la puissance du tokamak est importante. Ainsi le prototype de tokamak de puissance ITER, actuellement en cours de construction \u00e0 Cadarache, pourrait voir l’ensemble de son installation gravement endommag\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

L’une des causes importantes de ces disruptions est l’\u00e9l\u00e9vation de la densit\u00e9 du plasma au-del\u00e0 d’une certaine valeur critique dite « limite de Greenwald ». Cette limite semble universelle et son origine reste jusqu’\u00e0 ce jour \u00e9nigmatique. Pour que la fusion se produise dans le plasma, il faut que celui-ci soit suffisamment dense et chaud pour permettre le rapprochement des noyaux l\u00e9gers contenus dans ce plasma et provoquer leur recombinaison en noyaux plus lourds. Cette recombinaison s’accompagne d’un fort d\u00e9gagement d’\u00e9nergie sous forme de chaleur, que l’on cherche \u00e0 r\u00e9cup\u00e9rer pour produire ensuite de l’\u00e9lectricit\u00e9. Cette r\u00e9action de fusion est d’ailleurs mise \u00e0 l’oeuvre naturellement dans le soleil et la plupart des \u00e9toiles. A priori, plus on injecte d’\u00e9nergie dans le plasma, plus l’on s’attend \u00e0 en augmenter la densit\u00e9, et donc \u00e0 privil\u00e9gier les r\u00e9actions de fusion. La limite de Greenwald contredit cette intuition. Par ailleurs, \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 que le taux de r\u00e9actions nucl\u00e9aires est proportionnel au carr\u00e9 de la densit\u00e9 du plasma, cette limite bride les performances d’un tokamak de taille donn\u00e9e. Ainsi les scientifiques cherchent \u00e0 en expliquer les origines depuis des d\u00e9cennies.<\/p>\n

L’\u00e9tude approfondie de L.Delgado et D. Gates se penche sur ce probl\u00e8me. Ils proposent une explication toute fra\u00eeche, diff\u00e9rente de celle propos\u00e9e par Greenwald, le physicien du MIT qui a \u00e9tabli l’\u00e9quation d\u00e9crivant cette limite (et qui porte son nom). D’apr\u00e8s Greenwald, l’instabilit\u00e9 proviendrait d’un rayonnement excessif du plasma de bord qui abaisse sa temp\u00e9rature, augmentant ainsi sa r\u00e9sistivit\u00e9. Le courant qui circule dans le plasma se transf\u00e8re alors du bord vers son centre, si bien que la densit\u00e9 de courant au centre atteint la valeur seuil (dite de Kruskal-Shafranov (KS), proportionnelle au champ toro\u00efdal) \u00e0 partir de laquelle se d\u00e9veloppe une instabilit\u00e9 magn\u00e9tohydrodynamique (MHD) : le plasma s’entortille et touche la paroi du tokamak o\u00f9 il se refroidit. Le courant du plasma est ainsi forc\u00e9 de p\u00e9n\u00e9trer dans la paroi, d’o\u00f9 des d\u00e9gradations. Cependant l’initiation et le terme de ce processus ne sont pas clairs.<\/p>\n

L’approche propos\u00e9e par L. Delgado et D. Gates se concentre sur les \u00eelots magn\u00e9tiques qui se forment lorsque la limite est atteinte. Ils montrent \u00e0 l’appui d’\u00e9quations que ces derniers seraient la cause de l’effondrement du plasma. Le rapprochement entre ces ilots et l’effondrement n’est pas nouveau, mais la relation de cause \u00e0 effet n’a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 mise en \u00e9vidence dans les pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes \u00e9tudes.<\/p>\n

Voil\u00e0 donc le nouveau sc\u00e9nario qu’ils proposent : les \u00eelots seraient responsables de deux effets n\u00e9gatifs : d’une part ils accumulent des impuret\u00e9s provenant des parois du tokamak qui refroidissent le plasma, et d’autre part, ils agissent tels des boucliers contre l’ajout suppl\u00e9mentaire d’\u00e9nergie dans le syst\u00e8me. Lorsque la puissance inject\u00e9e devient inf\u00e9rieure \u00e0 la puissance d\u00e9gag\u00e9e des \u00eelots par effet Joule, l’\u00e9quilibre se rompt. Les \u00eelots se d\u00e9veloppent jusqu’\u00e0 atteindre une taille suffisamment importante pour entra\u00eener l’effondrement du courant \u00e9lectrique qui aide \u00e0 confiner le plasma. Le plasma dispara\u00eet alors en quelques millisecondes.<\/p>\n

Il ne reste maintenant plus qu’\u00e0 v\u00e9rifier ces hypoth\u00e8ses exp\u00e9rimentalement, ce qui est pr\u00e9vu prochainement sur les tokamaks C-Mod du MIT et DIII-D de General Atomics \u00e0 San Diego. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 cette nouvelle vision du probl\u00e8me, L. Delgado et D. Gates ont pens\u00e9 \u00e0 une \u00e9ventuelle solution pour parvenir \u00e0 des densit\u00e9s au-del\u00e0 de la limite de Greenwald : celle-ci consisterait \u00e0 injecter l’\u00e9nergie directement au coeur des \u00eelots. Si cette manipulation s’av\u00e9rait fonctionner, les conditions n\u00e9cessaires \u00e0 la fusion (hautes temp\u00e9ratures et densit\u00e9 \u00e9lev\u00e9e) pourraient alors \u00eatre bien plus ais\u00e9ment mises en oeuvre dans le futur. <\/p>\n
