Plusieurs provinces canadiennes ont ouvert les for\u00eats publiques \u00e0 l’extraction \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle de mati\u00e8re v\u00e9g\u00e9tale (arbres, arbuste, souches, racines et feuillages) pour produire de l’\u00e9nergie \u00e0 partir de leur combustion dans des centrales \u00e9lectriques.<\/p>\n
L’association \u00e9cologiste qualifie cette politique de \u00ab\u00a0biomascarade\u00a0\u00bb et fait remarquer qu’il n’y a eu aucun d\u00e9bat public sur la question ni mise en place de r\u00e8gles environnementales ad\u00e9quates.<\/p>\n
Contrairement \u00e0 ce que pr\u00e9tendent les autorit\u00e9s et les compagnies int\u00e9ress\u00e9es, Greenpeace affirme que la combustion ces arbres n’est pas \u00ab\u00a0carboneutre\u00a0\u00bb, autrement dit qu’elle ne pr\u00e9sente pas de bilan neutre des \u00e9missions de dioxyde de carbone et plus g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement de gaz \u00e0 effet de serre.<\/p>\n
En fait, les centrales \u00e9lectriques nord-am\u00e9ricaines fonctionnant \u00e0 la biomasse \u00ab\u00a0\u00e9mettent jusqu’\u00e0 150% de plus de CO2, 400% de plus de monoxyde de carbone irritant pour les poumons, et 200% de plus de particules fines qui causent l’asthme\u00a0\u00bb, affirme Nicolas Mainville, responsable de la campagne \u00ab\u00a0For\u00eat\u00a0\u00bb de Greenpeace dans son rapport.<\/p>\n
Par ailleurs, les \u00e9missions de CO2 provenant de la bio\u00e9nergie foresti\u00e8re ne sont pas comptabilis\u00e9es parce que les autorit\u00e9s les consid\u00e8rent \u00e0 tort comme carboneutres. En r\u00e9alit\u00e9, toujours selon Greenpeace Canada, il s’agit d’environ 40 m\u00e9gatonnes par an, ce qui d\u00e9passe celles du parc automobile canadien en 2009.<\/p>\n
